About Padova
Padua (Padova) is a vibrant city in the Veneto region of northeast Italy. Known as the city of Saint Anthony, it blends a rich historical and cultural heritage with modern vitality. Padua is strategically located in the Po Valley between Venice and Verona, and near the Euganean Hills and the renowned Euganean Spas.
The city is notable for its two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the oldest academic botanical garden and the fourteenth-century fresco cycles housed in eight civic and sacred sites under “Padova Urbs Picta.”
Padua is described as a city of art and culture, home to architectural wonders and a legacy shaped by figures like Giotto, Donatello, Petrarch, and Galileo. Its historical significance is reflected in its medieval architecture, the prestigious University of Padua, and the charm of its villas, arcaded streets, and squares. Additionally, Padua offers a comprehensive tourism experience combining art, history, and nature.
Palazzo della Salute
Via S. Francesco, 90, Padua – Italy
The Palazzo della Salute in Padua is a building rich in history and today stands as a shining example of cultural heritage restoration and enhancement. Formerly known as the Hospital of San Francesco Grande, it was the city’s first hospital, founded in 1414. For centuries, it served as a vital point of reference for medical practice in Padua: it was here, starting in the 16th century, that medical students began bedside clinical training, introducing a groundbreaking and pioneering approach to medical education.
The hospital remained in operation until 1798. After a long period of abandonment, the building underwent a major restoration and redevelopment project, transforming it into a modern and multifunctional center. Today, the Palazzo della Salute is home to MUSME – the Museum of the History of Medicine in Padua – an interactive museum that presents the history of medical science in an innovative way, with a special focus on the key role Padua has played in this field.
The Palazzo della Salute thus represents a perfect balance between historical memory and contemporary innovation: a place where the past and future of medicine meet and engage in dialogue, returning to the city a vibrant, dynamic space open to the entire community.
